Recipe- Hot Dr. Pepper

Hot Boiled Dr PepperYeah, I thought it sounded weird and ghetto too. But Angela says her family used to drink this stuff in Alaska on cold nights(and there are alot of those). Well, it took hell freezing over a February snow storm in Texas to finally convince me to finally try it out. I’ve had unconventional hot drinks before, but that’s usually because I left something in the car in August. By the way, hot Gatorade really isn’t too bad!

Enough stalling, let’s get to the recipe!

Ingredients:

  • Dr. Pepper
  • Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Bring Dr. Pepper to a boil in a pot.
  2. Pour Boiled Dr. Pepper into a mug.
  3. Sprinkle a little cinnamon in or stir with a cinnamon stick.
  4. Reflect on why you really needed a recipe to make Dr. Pepper hot.

Impressions:

Wow, this stuff is really good! Those Eskimos really know what they’re doing(and yes I know not everyone in Alaska is an Eskimo or a polar bear. Let me dream, damnit!) Dr. Pepper is made up of a secret formula of 23 different flavors. Somehow, boiling the soda really brings out the fruitiness of the flavors. The cinnamon counters with a really nice spiciness. If you do it right, you can even still taste a little of the carbonation.

You guys have really got to try this! I’m adding this to my list of winter drinks right next to hot chocolate and apple cider. And to a lesser(but very important) extent, mind erasers. I wanted to see how well hot Dr. Pepper fared against hot chocolate in the most important hot drink category: marshmallowability. Here’s my results:

Hot Dr. Pepper with Marshmallows

It looks cool alright, almost fitting. And best of all, the marshmallows actually plump up in the soda! The taste however is a bit confusing. I don’t normally expect my marshmallows to taste fruity. Actually, I’m used to marshmallows tasting like sweet cardboard ala Lucky Charms so I guess this is at least better than that. I’ll have to try it again later and see how I feel. My taste buds were probably still confused about the 23 flavors without having to worry about jet puffed goodness.

Wow, we learned a lot today! Let’s recap:

  • Hot Dr. Pepper and cinnamon is awesome.
  • Marshmallows are (very) optional.
  • Strange white precipitation is not a sign that the sky is falling, even though Texas drivers seem to think so.
  • Angela is awesome too.
  • Marshmallowability is a sweet word and is now trademarked by ME!
  • Not everyone in Alaska is a polar bear or an Eskimo(only about 95%)
  • Roatha can write an awful lot about making Dr. Pepper warmer.

A&W Rootbeer Float in a bottle- close but no cigar

A&W Rootbeer Float in a bottleA&W’s my favorite root beer so I was excited to try their new ready-made ice cream float! I picked up a bottle at a convenience store nearby. It was unexpectedly creamy and tastes like they bottled it after all the ice cream melted. Which actually would make sense because at that point the pop would’ve lost most of it’s carbonation and the bottled stuff tastes only lightly carbonated.

It was definitely tasty, but I don’t think they quite hit the “just like the real thing” meter. I think it was the “artificial ice cream flavor”, which I’m pretty sure is just vanilla extract laid on thickly. There’s also an after taste, that’s some mix of vanilla extract and cream. I bet that’s supposed to be the foam from a real float, but then again it also reminds me of Yoo-Hoo which is a step in a random direction.

Overall I call it a yummy, creamy drink in it’s own right, but it really isn’t very float-like.
